Turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes and stuffing.

Thanksgiving is a time for friends, family and food, but for a diabetic, it presents a whole obstacle course of challenges. Monitoring your sugar levels is the last thing anyone wants to be doing when they’re surrounded by loved ones, celebrating a holiday.

During this National Diabetes Awareness Month, we want to remind our community that you don’t have to be diabetic to make healthier choices, especially when they’re this good! Don’t let your holiday spirit be dampened – try some of these diabetic approved recipes for your Thanksgiving meal.

Scalloped Potatoes and Ham

Nothing says comfort food like potatoes and cheese and this dish has both, plus ham. It’s a diabetic-friendly take on a classic baked dish. It might be nearly half of the calories of the original, but it doesn’t lose any of the taste. And don’t forget – the more herbs, the better. Add thyme or sage for a fragrant bake that will leave your whole house smelling great.

Lemon Quinoa

If you’re looking for something a little lighter than the typical Thanksgiving fare, then this is the dish for you. Nutrient-dense quinoa is just as filling as mashed potatoes and dinner rolls, too. Protein and vitamins will keep you energized for any post-Thanksgiving games.

Brown Gravy

This Thanksgiving classic can’t be missed out on, but we don’t mind giving up some of the calories. Make a few health-conscientious substitutions with this recipe and your family won’t be able to tell the difference.

Green Bean Casserole

Fragrant herbs, perfectly crisp greens and a topping of crunchy and delectable bread crumbs come together to make this ultimate Thanksgiving side dish. Low-fat cream makes a great substitution for the usual, full-fat cream of mushroom filling.

Love a particular recipe? Maybe it’s your grandma’s mashed potatoes, or your dad’s collard greens. Don’t despair just yet! Most recipes can be adapted for your dietary needs by swapping out some of the fattier ingredients. We suggest using low-sodium and low-fat options when possible.

Healthy lifestyles don’t happen overnight, but it’s never too late to start. During this National Diabetes Awareness Month, we want everyone to be included in their Thanksgiving festivities and incorporate more health-conscience substitutions.
