Yesterday evening 12-11-20, the FDA granted Pfizer an Emergency Use Authorization for its Covid-19 vaccine. STAT Specialty Hospital will receive from the State of Texas 1,950 doses of the Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. Along with Laredo Medical Center’s 975 doses, Webb County is poised to receive a total 2,925 doses of this new vaccine.

STAT has been at the forefront of our fight against the coronavirus – from fast diagnostic testing, to cutting-edge therapies such as monoclonal antibodies and remdesivir. Our leadership team has been proactively working for weeks dealing with the rigorous documentation process to apply for this vaccine.

The vaccine will initially go to health care workers at the front lines of this pandemic, and to the elderly community residing in our nursing homes. This is in accordance with CDC and State guidelines in prioritizing the highest risk populations for immunization first. STAT will adhere strictly to the guidelines set forth to ensure fairness.

Since this epidemic hit Laredo in February 2020, Stat’s leaders have joined efforts with our City Leaders and Emergency Management Team. Together we have been strategically working in bringing best healthcare solutions to our community and surrounding areas. Our leadership team in conjunction with Mr. Richard Chamberlain, Director of the Laredo Health Department, will join efforts in implementing a sharing allocation program to distribute vaccines to other healthcare facilities that did not receive vaccines.

Laredo should be proud of our local heroes who work behind the scenes. We owe a debt of gratitude to all our physicians, clinical and ancillary staff for their courage, sacrifice and hard work in helping fight this unprecedented pandemic. The continuous support received from our physician leaders and partners such as Michael Chang, MD and Sebastian Padron, Medical Director; along with our leadership team Ray Palacios, ER Manager, Krisdian Vazquez, Executive Operations Administrator, Melissa Gonzalez, Administrator Stat South, Grey Valdez, Patient Access, Tony Salazar, Lab Director, Jerry Vazquez, Lab Lead and Mireya Cruz, Radiology Director – all deserve to be specially recognized for their diligent work and unwavering 24/7 commitment in supporting our community and patients we serve.

Because the vaccines are not able to be delivered fast enough to meet Laredo’s needs, we ask everyone to continue to practice masking, social distancing and hand hygiene until enough vaccine is available to all who needs it. Stay safe and remain diligent in the fight against this pandemic.
